Jelena Noura Hadid was born on April 23, 1995, in Los Angeles, California. Her father, Mohamed Hadid, is a Palestinian-American real estate developer, and her mother, Yolanda Hadid, is a Dutch former model who later starred in The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The nickname Gigi came from her mother and became her name at school.

She is the oldest of three siblings, with a younger sister, Bella, and a younger brother, Anwar, who are both models. Through her father she also has older half-sisters, Marielle and Alana, and a younger half-sister, Aydan Nix, whom the family publicly welcomed in May 2025.
